Amazfit has been highly successful with its GTR lineup, it’s currently one of the best smartwatches that you can buy with a round display. Every wearable enthusiast, as well as GTR enthusiast, eagerly waited for the next iteration of the GTR watch. And, Amazfit surprised all of us when they came out with GTR 3 & GTR 3 Pro.

For the average consumer, the GTR family became quite confusing! I mean is GTR 3 as good as GTR 2? (Short answer, it’s complicated). Is GTR 3 Pro worth the extra price or should I buy GTR 2 instead of 3? I don’t think I need to go down the questions rabbit hole, you get the point.

So seeing all these questions pop up in forums, reviews, & on our YouTube channel, I decided to write Amazfit GTR 2 vs GTR 3 vs GTR 3 Pro comparison.

Instead of just listing the straight-up differences, I have decided to distribute those differences into various categories so it will make better sense to you. Let’s start with the build quality.

In terms of build quality, GTR 3 & GTR 3 Pro sport an aluminum body which is better than the stainless steel one found in the GTR 2 watch. And, this difference has contributed to significant weight reduction as both GTR 3 & GTR 3 Pro weighs only 32grams. GTR 2 on the other hand weighs 39grams.

However, this wasn’t something surprising from Amazfit as they had previously launched Amazfit GTR 2 sports edition that featured an aluminum body that also weighs the same.

One thing that Amazfit has seemed to be given up is the watches available in multiple sizes. The first-gen GTR launched in 42mm as well as 47mm watch sizes. The 42mm version was one of the ideal smartwatches for users with petite wrists now all the Amazfit GTR watches only come in 47mm size.

All three Amazfit watches come with an AMOLED display which ensures the display is crisp & easy to read. However, there are some major differences when compared to the previous generation model. First & foremost, GTR 3 & GTR 3 Pro features a display that is capable of doing peak brightness of 1000 nits.

Display comparison of GTR 2 vs GTR 3 Vs GTR 3 Pro

The previous Generation GTR 2 did peak brightness of 450 nits so 3rd generation watches have doubled their performance. For you, it means that the display on GTR 3 & 3 Pro will be visible even in the peak summer brightness without requiring you to use your hands as binoculars.

Moreover, the display resolution has been further improved on the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro as it now features 480 X 480 resolution. It is a huge upgrade compared to the 454 X 454 resolution found in GTR 3 & GTR 2.

Similarly, GTR 3 Pro features a bigger 1.45-inch display with a pixel density of 331. On the other hand, GTR 3 features the same 1.39-inch display with 326-pixel density found in GTR 2. Still, the display performance of the GTR 2 & GTR 3 is in no way bad in the sub 200$ price segment, if anything they put various popular expensive smartwatches to shame.

In the display department, GTR 3 Pro is the clear winner as it features better resolution, a bigger display as well as peak brightness. Compared to that, GTR 3 retains the old resolution & screen size with higher peak brightness. In my day-to-day usage, I never felt in any way that GTR 3’s display was lacking in any department.

Another improvement that has been made is in the button department. The upper button on the GTR 2 had very limited functionality of powering on/off, opening & closing the menu.

However, on GTR 3 & 3 Pro the upper button has been replaced with a crown that can be used to navigate the menu as well as all the sub-menu. You can also press the crown to power on/off, and open/close the menu as you did in the GTR 2 watch. By default long-pressing, the crown launches Alexa which can be customized to launch any other app like a torch, PAI score, Workout history, or any other app instead.

The lower button remains the same as it is in GTR 2 watches, it is still a customizable button that by default launches your workout profiles.

Next-generation GTR 3 & 3 Pro watches also feature an all-new & improved Biotracker 3.0 PPG sensor. It features all the usual 24*7 heart rate tracking, VO2 Max, and SpO2 features with some major improvements.

Sensor on GTR series watches

The first improvement is that GTR 3 & 3 Pro can track multiple health vitals at once. So you will be able to track your blood oxygen, breath per minute, stress level, & heartbeat per minute.

Multiple health vitals tracking

Another improvement that has been made is that GTR 3 & 3 Pro can now automatically record your blood oxygen in the background. In previous-gen GTR 2 watch, the ability to take your blood oxygen reading was there but you had to initiate the SpO2 reading manually every time. Without a doubt, this is a welcome improvement in this day & age.

Sports tracking is one of the most significant features today in smartwatches. Not just for running but today smartwatches are used for skiing, mountaineering, jump roping, & even bodybuilding. And, that’s why 90+ sports profiles found on GTR 2 watches have been bumped up to 150+ in 3rd gen watches.

If you are a runner then Amazfit has also introduced a Virtual Pacer feature that allows you to race against yourself. It is a pretty neat feature to have if you are someone who enjoys running.

Besides the number of sports profiles, Amazfit has also increased the number of sports activities 3rd gen GTR watch can detect automatically.  The previous generation GTR 2 watches were only able to detect 6 activities namely outdoor running, treadmill, walking, outdoor cycling, pool swimming, and Elliptical.

On GTR 3 & 3 Pro, the automatic detection for automatic indoor walking & rowing machine has been added which brings the number of activities they can automatically track to 8.

Improvements To The GPS Connectivity

GTR 2 only supports GPS & GLONASS navigation satellites to track your run on the smartwatch. They are more than enough for most users but if you want to track your hike in a remote location with lots of trees then more navigation satellites can come in handy. That’s why GTR 3 & 3 Pro come with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BDS, & QZSS navigation satellite support.

Let’s move on to the connectivity part of the Amazfit GTR 2 vs GTR 3 vs GTR 3 Pro comparison. This is where it will get confusing, bear with me!

GTR 2 supports Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity and this has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.1 in GTR 3 & 3 Pro.

This brings us to one of the biggest changes that Amazfit has made to the GTR 3 watch which is the logical successor to the GTR 2. GTR 3 lacks support for offline music playback entirely which is why the watch doesn’t support Bluetooth earphones pairing & WiFi connectivity for music transfer. Also, you cannot pick calls on the GTR 3 watch as it lacks a speaker for the same. It is to be noted that all these features were available in the previous-gen GTR 2 watch.

No speaker

If those are important features for you then you will have to go with Amazfit GTR 3 Pro as it has music playback, speaker as well as WiFi connectivity.

Naming Scheme – Quite Obviously Not Obvious

If you are someone who is totally new to Amazfit then the naming scheme won’t be an issue for you. GTR 3 Pro is the flagship & 3 is an affordable version with some compromises. However, someone who is already into the Amazfit ecosystem may end up thinking that GTR 3 will have all the features that GTR 2 has but that’s not the case.

So naming scheme as the title suggests is quite obviously not obvious.

Battery Life

Battery life

One segment where GTR 2 comes out on top is the battery department as it features a 471mAh battery. On the other hand, Amazfit GTR 3 & 3 Pro comes with a smaller 450mah battery. Still, during my usage, I found the GTR 3 offering 6 days of battery life with most features enabled. You can check out our in-depth review of GTR 3 on our channel Wearholic.

Which One Should You Buy?

Is Fitness A Priority?

Do You Need A Smartwatch That Can Make Calls In A Budget?

Everyone these days is looking for a smartwatch that comes with a speaker & microphone. However, the affordable GTR 3 lacks the speaker as well as Bluetooth connectivity to pair headphones to take calls. So the only option you are left with is GTR 2 & GTR 3 Pro as they support these features.

I personally would recommend waiting for a sale to see if 3 Pro becomes more affordable. Still, if you need a watch now then GTR 2 is still a great option. Albeit, you don’t mind the previous-gen Biotracker 2.0 sensor, missing automatic SpO2 reading, & a little less bright display then go for it.
