What Is An ECG? Is It Different Form EKG?

Before we go into measuring the ECG, let us first understand what an ECG is. ECG stands for Electrocardiogram or Electrocardiograph and it is a test that measures the electrical activity in the heart.

Now you must be wondering what electrical activity happens in our heart that an ECG measures, right? With every heartbeat, an electrical pulse is generated in the heart that causes a contraction and eventually pumping of the blood in the body. The ECG measures the same electric pulse and shows us the intensity and frequency of these electric pulses. And the result of this test helps in determining the overall condition of the heart.

You must have heard of the term EKG many times when talking about ECG. But is ECG different from EKG or do they mean the same thing? As discussed earlier, ECG stands for Electrocardiogram or Electrocardiograph, which are both English words. On the other hand, EKG stands for Elektrokardiogramm, which is a German word. So there you go, they are pretty different in spellings, however, the meaning of both is the same.

How Does Smartwatch’s ECG Feature Works?

Normally, an ECG requires 12 electrodes, as standard, to be placed around the heart and on the limbs of the patient. These electrodes detect the tiny electrical signals that get generated under your skin by the beating of the heart.

However, the ECG tracker in smartwatches works differently, rather than placing 12 electrodes they act as a single electrode and requires you to wear it on one hand and place the other hand’s finger either on their crown or on the edges for 30 seconds. They then detect the tiny electrical pulses and also measure the heart activity by the process of photoplethysmography, this process makes use of light beams and sensors.

You can know more about this process by reading my article on how the heart rate monitor in a smartwatch works. Once it has collected data regarding electric pulses and heart rate then the smartwatch ECG algorithm, which differs from company to company, analyzes the data from both the sensors and shows you the results.

How Accurate Is Smartwatch ECG Function?

As discussed earlier in this article, the clinical ECG measuring requires 12-lead electrodes to capture the tiny electrical pulses that get generated when our heart beats. And a smartwatch makes use of just one lead electrode to do the same. Therefore it cannot capture as much data as a standard ECG machine and hence it should not be considered as the replacement of clinical ECGs. In fact, every smartwatch manufacturer says and mentions the same thing if you will look at the mentioned feature in their brochure or box. That being said, if you face any issue related to your heart then you should not risk it and should immediately contact a doctor.

However, it does not mean that a smartwatch with ECG is of no use. In fact, a study done by Harvard shows that an Apple watch had 93 to 95% accuracy in identifying and detecting different types of heart attacks.

That said, smartwatches cannot perfectly detect a heart attack or any major problem with your heart but they can detect atrial fibrillation or any other abnormal heart rhythm. And if you face frequent heart problems then it is a very good option to keep an eye on your heart through the smartwatch’s ECG. Because you never know, a small help could be life-saving. In fact, there are cases where smartwatches were able to detect a possible heart attack and thereby saving the life of the users. So you should definitely buy a smartwatch with an ECG feature if you face any such issues.
