The Internet of Things is the next big deal in the connected world that we live in. Not only your smartphone and watch but there are household appliances like ceiling fan that comes with connected technology.

So the question that must be bothering you is: Does Fitbit work without an Internet connection? Or you will be dependent on your cell phone or a WiFi network to use your so-called smartwatch that can’t run on its own?

Well, the answer to this question is both yes and no. Yes, you will be able to use your Fitbit fitness tracker or smartwatch without WiFi or the Internet. But to set it up for the first time you will need your smartphone as well as an Internet connection.

Once the setup is complete, you will be able to do the following things with your Fitbit:

  • Track your workouts
  • Measure your heart rate and other health parameters
  • Track your sleep
  • Make payments through Fitbit Pay
  • See time and set alarms, etc.

However, to see detailed stats on these things you will need your smartphone and an Internet connection. If I say watches cannot be smart if they can’t run on their own, will you agree with me? I know you do. But the reality is very different, smartwatches can do things that your smartphone can’t do. And the simplest example of this is health tracking, you can track your health and fitness with a smartwatch but you can’t do it with every smartphone. However, smartwatches cannot be utilized to their full potential without a smartphone.

The same is the case with Fitbit smartwatches and fitness trackers. You cannot use Fitbit without a phone for the very first time. To set up a Fitbit, a smartphone is required. However, once the Fitbit is set up, then you will be able to use it to do most things with it.

The thing that you need to understand here is that the size of a smartwatch is very small. And due to this reason, it has limited storage, a small screen, a small battery, etc. Therefore it cannot store a lot of data or it cannot show you a lot of data. You will be able to track your health with it but it will not be able to show you detailed stats of your health. Therefore to use your Fitbit to its full potential, you will need to connect it to your cell phone.

Having said that, this wasn’t the case always. Fitbit used to offer a Fitbit Wireless Sync Dongle. This dongle was used to sync all your data from your smartwatch to your computer or laptop wirelessly. The Wireless Sync Dongle eliminated the use of smartphones with the Fitbit smartwatch. However, Fitbit has discontinued its dongle and you cannot purchase it now.
