You generally do not get a charging brick with smartwatches and Garmin watches are no different. Garmin also does not provide a charger with any of its smartwatches or fitness trackers. So if you have just bought a new Garmin watch then you must be wondering about the following questions:
- Can I charge a Garmin watch without a charger?
- Or will I have to buy a new charger for my watch?
So let me just answer the question for you without any further ado. Yes, there are ways that you can use to charge your Garmin watch without a charger. So you do not have to shell out more money to buy a new charger for your watch.
How To Charge A Garmin Watch Without Cable?
Unfortunately, you cannot charge your Garmin watch without its cable if your watch does not support solar charging.
As discussed, it is possible to charge a Garmin watch without a charger. But is it also possible to charge it without its cable?
Garmin uses a unique port and cable to charge its watches. Therefore you cannot charge Garmin smartwatches or fitness trackers if you don’t have its charging cable.
Having said that, if your Garmin watch comes with solar charging then you will be able to charge it wirelessly with the help of light.
How To Charge Garmin Watch Without Charger?
Now let us look at the different ways that you can use to charge your Garmin watch without a charger.
1) Use Your Cell Phone Charger
The first way to charge your Garmin smartwatch without charger is by using your cell phone’s charger. All you need is the Garmin charging cable and then you can use it with any charger be it for your smartphone or any other device.
Just remember to use a charging brick that is not so powerful. Because if you supply excess power to your smartwatch then its battery can get damaged.
2) Use Your Laptop Or PC
You can also make use of the USB port on your laptop or desktop. Just connect your Garmin cable to your watch and its USB end to your PC and you are good to go.
However, the thing that you need to note here is that a laptop or desktop supplies a very limited amount of electricity. Therefore it might take a considerably longer time to charge your Garmin smartwatch.
3) USB Wall Outlet
If you have a USB-type outlet on the switchboard then you can also use it to charge your Garmin watch. The wall outlet will work as a charging brick and will supply the power that your smartwatch needs. However, before plugging your watch check out the output of the charging wall socket. If it is low then your watch will take a longer time to get charged. And if it is high then it might damage your smartwatch’s battery.
4) Solar Charging
There are many Garmin smartwatch variants that support solar charging. If you happen to have one then you can charge your Garmin watch wirelessly by just placing it under the sun or under artificial light.
5) Power Bank
If you own a power bank then you can also use it to charge your Garmin smartwatch or fitness tracker. Just connect the USB end of the charging cable to the power bank and the other end to your smartwatch.
Can I Charge My Garmin Watch Wirelessly?
Yes, you can charge your Garmin watch wirelessly if it supports solar charging.
Wireless charging is the trend nowadays, be it smartphones, headphones, or any other device, most of them come with wireless charging. And if you own a Garmin smartwatch or are planning to buy one then you must be wondering whether you can charge the Garmin watch wirelessly or not.
There are many smartwatch brands that are offering wireless charging in their watches. Some smartwatches come with Qi charging as well, which lets you charge them from Qi wireless charger.
However, unfortunately, Garmin watches do not support wireless charging therefore you cannot use your wireless charging pad to charge your Garmin.
Having said that, there is a way to charge your Garmin smartwatch wirelessly. Many Garmin watch variants support solar charging these days. And if you own a Garmin watch that can be charged from solar energy then you can charge it wirelessly. All you have to do is place it under the light, be it natural or artificial and it will start charging.
However, the thing that you need to note here is that it takes a considerable amount of time to get charged from solar energy.
Can You Charge Garmin While Running?
Yes, you can charge your Garmin while running if it supports solar charging.
If you are a runner then you must want to use your Garmin all the time while running and practicing, right? I am sure every run and practice session is very important to you and you want to track them all. But what happens when you forget to charge your Garmin?
You must want to charge it while you are running, right? But can you charge Garmin while running?
Well, the answer to this question is both yes and no. If your Garmin does not come with solar charging then you cannot charge it while running. Because the charging pins of Garmin are on the back of the watch and if you want to charge it then you will have to take your watch off.
However, if your Garmin supports solar charging then it will keep charging if you are running out in the sun.
Can You Overcharge A Garmin Watch?
No, you cannot overcharge a Garmin watch. However, I will recommend not charging your Garmin overnight.
According to Garmin, its fitness tracker and smartwatches come with a charging cut-off feature. This feature cuts off the power supply to the watch once its battery is fully charged. As a result, it prevents Garmin smartwatches from getting overcharged.
Having said that, I will not recommend you charge your Garmin overnight or leave it on charging for a very long time. It can damage the battery of your smartwatch. The thing that you need to understand is your watch consumes battery even if it is sitting idle.
Now imagine this, your Garmin battery is charged to 100% and the power is no longer getting supplied to it. But what happens when your watch’s battery starts discharging and comes down to 99.9%? It will again start charging till it’s 100%, right?
If you leave your watch on charge for really long hours then just imagine how many times this cycle will keep repeating before you finally switch off its charging. And I think this will do more harm to your watch’s battery and hence I will not recommend you leave your watch on charging for long hours.
Should You Charge Your Garmin With A Cell Phone Charger?
Yes, you should charge your Garmin with a cell phone charger only if it has the same power output that your watch supports.
As discussed, the higher output charger can damage your smartwatch’s battery. And a low-output charger will take more time to charge your smartwatch. Therefore using your cell phone charger to charge your Garmin is a good idea if the charger output is what your watch needs. A little lower or higher output is ok but there should not be a major difference.
